William R. Gaines, a 1950 School of the Arts graduate, spent much of his 34-year career shaping the art programs of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. After his retirement, VCU asked Gaines to serve as interim director of the Anderson Gallery
in 1987–88.
“My year at the Anderson Gallery was quite challenging and enormously gratifying,“ recalls Gaines. “I owe much of what I am to my RPI education, and I am proud to see the School thriving today.”
Bill Gaines has supported VCU School of the Arts in many ways, including establishing two charitable gift annuities that will endow a fellowship to assist practicing art students in the School.
