LaVaune and Charles Wetmore
A Seed Planted Many Years Ago…

We often hear from people touched many years ago by Children's Care; good people with kind hearts who want to help the boys and girls we serve. One such person is LaVaune Wetmore of Vermillion, SD. In the 1950's, LaVaune and her husband, Charles, encountered Children's Care (then Crippled Children's Hospital & School) through Dr. Guy VanDemark, who treated their son, Mark. LaVaune and Charles never forgot what it was like to be parents needing help for their child, and for many years wanted to return the favor in some way.

At 95, LaVaune still mows her lawn, gardens, and cherishes any time outdoors. She loves birds and animals, as well as children, so it seemed only natural that her gift to Children's Care should be to provide an outdoor spot for children to play. A permanent endowment fund will be established in her name to maintain the playground at Children's Care and to purchase new and replacement equipment as needed.

LaVaune visited Children's Care in Sioux Falls recently with her son, Mark, now retired. (Charles passed away in 2003.) Her heart again went out to the children, and thought the playground a fitting legacy for her family. Children's Care will recognize her generosity with the permanent "LaVaune Wetmore Playground" name included on a child-friendly statue of a rabbit to be installed on the playground. "I've always loved children," says LaVaune. "When I thought of the children and the needs they have, I just wanted to help." A seed planted many years ago has bloomed in a beautiful way.
