"I know the importance that giving makes because I see the difference when we are able to fund an additional scholarship. I know this will make a direct impact on a student's NECO experience and I am proud to support that."
Kristen Boonie Griebel, OD'97, came to NECO from Pennsylvania over 15 years ago and liked Boston so much she stayed in the area. Since the age of 12, Dr. Griebel knew that she wanted to do something in science. Furthermore, since she needed contacts and was at the optometrist frequently, she chose optometry.
When visiting optometry schools, Dr. Griebel was impressed with NECO right away. The small supportive community was a good fit with her, coming from large Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Kamens, former Dean of Students, swayed her to come to NECO and she received some scholarship funding from the College. "I had a great experience at NECO and the scholarship I received helped me out," Dr. Griebel explained. After graduating, she honed her skills in NECO's primary care residency program with faculty members Tony Cavallerano, OD'72 and Gerald Selvin, OD'73, where she taught, researched and worked at the Boston VA.
Since completing her residency, Dr. Griebel has worked for Natick Eye Associates with NECO alums Andrew Zodikoff, OD'86 and Stewart Ginsberg, OD'88. Working with a range of patients from youngsters to the elderly, Dr. Griebel thrives on not knowing who is walking in the door next. Dr. Griebel shares that she is learning on her feet every day. She attributes her success with this to a NECO class that taught her about managing patients' reactions.
Dr. Griebel also gives back to NECO by serving on the Alumni Association Board of Directors and the Scholarship Committee. Since she participates in Alumni Association Board meetings and directly sees what the College needs, philanthropy is understandable to her. "I concentrate on giving to the College because it is small and personal. I can imagine and see the results of my gift. To know that a student will benefit is important because it makes an impact on the College."
