Bequest Language
One of the easiest and most frequently used methods to make a planned gift to Claremont Graduate University is through a bequest. A simple statement in your will or living trust is all it takes. For example:
Specific bequest
With a specific bequest, you may stipulate that a certain percentage of your estate, a certain dollar amount, or particular assets be given to CGU. Examples of such language may include:
- "I give to the School of ________ at Claremont Graduate University, a nonprofit corporation located in Claremont, CA, the sum of $_________ .
- "I give to the School of ________ at Claremont Graduate University, a nonprofit corporation located in Claremont, CA, _______ % of my estate.
- "I give to the School of ________ at Claremont Graduate University, a nonprofit corporation located in Claremont, CA, the following described property: [describe property].
Residuary bequest
With a residuary bequest, you may state that all, or a portion, of the estate be given to CGU after specific gifts are distributed to other beneficiaries. Examples of such language may include:
- "I give to the School of_________ at Claremont Graduate University, a nonprofit corporation located in Claremont, CA, all of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate,
- for the university's general endowment fund.
- for a fellowship.
- however the university chooses to use this bequest."
- "I give to the School of _________ at Claremont Graduate University, a nonprofit corporation located in Claremont, CA, _______% of the rest, residue and remainder of my estate,
- for the university's general endowment fund.
- for a fellowship.
- however the university chooses to use this bequest."
Unrestricted bequest
An unrestricted bequest—the last example—is of special value due to the flexibility it provides the university.
