Dr. Eldon Bills was born in Wayne County, Iowa, and made his way to Sioux Falls College in 1949 after graduating from Corydon High School. Eldon attended Sioux Falls College from 1949 to 1952, majoring in chemistry, and was admitted into the dental school at Iowa State University while still a junior at SFC. At Iowa, he completed his DDS in 1956 and earned his master's degree both in prosthodontics (1957) and orthodontics (1961). He worked in general dentistry in Iowa City from 1956 to 1961, with three years of service at Camp Pendleton (1957-1959) in the Navy/Marine Corps. He continued to serve his country throughout his dental career and retired as a captain from the Navy Reserve in 1985. Eldon and his wife, Marilyn, a registered dental hygienist, started their own specialty orthodontic practice in 1961 in northern Arizona, where they served both the Flagstaff and Page communities for more than 40 years until their retirement in 2002. During his career, Eldon was the consummate lifelong learner as a student, teacher and leader. He spent hundreds of hours in continuing education, contributed numerous theses, articles, papers and presentations to the field of dentistry over the span of five decades, and he was a member of 25 professional dental organizations, many of which he served in leadership roles. Eldon has been a civic and community leader with Kiwanis, Elks, Boys Scouts of America and several outdoor associations. He has been a pilot since 1962 and an outdoor enthusiast for as long as he can remember. In 2000, Eldon and Marilyn established the Dr. Frank Weaver Endowed Pre-Dental and Pre-Medical Scholarship, named for longtime Sioux Falls College chemistry professor Dr. Frank Weaver. Since that time, the Weaver Scholarship has provided 36 scholarships to students who have gone on to careers in the dental, medical, research and nursing fields. Eldon and Marilyn have three sons, Loren, '81, Erik and Koner, and 10 grandchildren. To learn more about supporting the University of Sioux Falls, click here.
