The Barnes Society, established in 1987, honors those who have kindly made a bequest commitment at any level for Colorado College in their estate plans. The Society is named for Chemistry Professor Otis A. Barnes and his wife, Margaret Tyson Barnes '27, in recognition of their substantial generosity to the college through their estate plan.
In 1952, the Barneses established a modest trust to provide scholarships for chemistry students at the college. The trust, still in existence today, has provided full scholarships to hundreds of CC students, known as "Barnes Scholars." The Barneses also provided for CC in their estate plans. Their two bequests totaled just over an impressive $10 million! Margaret and Otis Barnes embodied a lifetime of generosity, and in recognition of their benefaction, the college named the Barnes Science Center in their honor.
Membership in the Barnes Society is simple yet so rewarding!
The only thing you need to do is let us know that CC is in your estate plans. There is no minimum amount, and you do not need to inform us of the amount.
There are many ways for you to do it! Most members have simply mentioned CC in their will... others have included us in charitable remainder trusts, lead trusts, gift annuities or deferred gift annuities.
Still others have named the college as the beneficiary of their insurance policy, and some have named the college as a beneficiary of their IRA or other retirement plan. There is lots of information on our website about these different ideas and, as always, we are happy to help in any way.
If you have already included CC in a bequest or other planned gift, we hope you will let us know. Your willingness to be listed as a member encourages others to follow your example. It also helps CC plan for the future—and most importantly—it allows us to thank you now!
Legacy Society
The Legacy Society recognizes Barnes Society members who have provided for the college with a minimum gift of $100,000.
