How You Can Help: You Could Be a Part of Ground-Breaking Health Care Advancements

Stroke and brain aneurysm patients searching for treatment options may now find help from an unexpected source—the auto industry. A robot that was designed and used to build luxury cars was modified to aid physicians, and St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital is the first facility in the world to test it on patients in the treatment of complex neurovascular illnesses.

The Artis zeego robotic device began testing in November 2007. Utilizing a new dimension of high precision and accurate reproducibility, the Artis zeego offers views of the brain and cerebral blood vessels that were previously unavailable. This means faster, more reliable diagnoses and treatment.

Michel Mawad, M.D., the associate service chief of radiology and director of neurovascular radiology at the NeuroScience Center at St. Luke's, is highly involved in the use of the Artis zeego. World-renowned in his field, Dr. Mawad is particularly interested in the diagnosis and treatment of strokes, both hemorrhagic and ischemic. He has helped pioneer and develop numerous techniques for the endovascular treatment of intracranial aneurysms.

The Artis zeego's cutting-edge technology can vastly improve the outcomes of St. Luke's patients, such as those treated by Dr. Mawad. With stroke patients— when seconds count in the search for the blood clot and the extent of damage—this robot can save lives and better a person's quality of life.

St. Lukes' participation in this ground-breaking medical study exemplifies its dedication to providing Faithful, Loving Care to patients from the Greater Houston area and across the globe. The goal of the study strongly aligns with the Hospital's commitment to continually raise the standard of excellence for which it is known.
