Friends & Neighbors: Jim Jenkins
"A hospital that is thriving, that is vibrant, is not only great for the physical health of our community, it's also extremely important for our fiscal health," said Jim Jenkins recently, in a conversation about his philanthropic efforts on behalf of Pen Bay Healthcare.
Jenkins, Vice President of Investments at UBS Financial Services in Rockland, moved to Maine with his wife, Anne, 30 years ago, after spending six years as an officer in the U.S. Army. His father and mother both came from Maine; they met when they were young teachers just out of college – Bowdoin and Colby, respectively. Although his parents never attained great wealth, "they believed in giving to the community and were active in their church and the Coastal Workshop," said Jenkins. "That belief rubbed off on my brother and me."
Once they settled into the area, Jenkins and his wife singled out Penobscot Bay Medical Center as one of the nonprofits they wanted to support. "A hospital is like a college campus in many ways," said Jenkins, who also is very involved with supporting the University of Maine system. "The employees are highly educated and tend to take pride in their community. They serve on nonprofit boards, in civic and religious organizations and in their children's schools. And certainly their paychecks go a long way toward supporting the midcoast economy." He added that having a hospital right in the community is very important for both retirees and young people when they are thinking about relocating to our area.
Jenkins has supported the hospital, as well as other Pen Bay Healthcare partners, in many ways. During his term as President of the Osprey Club for seven years, he and the members, who now number 50, gave more than $350,000 worth of equipment to PBMC. He has helped find people who were willing to give gifts to the Knox Center and Kno-Wal-Lin as well as the hospital. And he takes every opportunity to talk to organizations and individuals about making a gift or leaving a legacy to the Pen Bay Healthcare organizations.
"Believe it or not, there are people out there looking for places where they can give their support," he said. "If I can find a person who has the inclination to help out any part of Pen Bay Healthcare, I'm not shy about asking them!"
