Remembering Why We Help Others

Has giving lost its luster? It's time to get back to the basics! When you focus on why you give and what your gift can help accomplish, you may just find yourself exhilarated at the thought of making a donation. But how do you get there? Follow these steps:

Step 1: Remember your values. If you asked your closest friends and relatives to name the principles you believe in most strongly, what would they say? What principles do you hold most dearly?

Step 2: Concentrate your efforts. Are there organizations or causes that you don't currently support but that align with your list of values? Would you like to consider donating time or money to their mission?

Step 3: Imagine a personal plan. Don't let limited resources intimidate you. Even a few hours or a few dollars can have a meaningful impact.

Step 4: Look before you leap. Be as prudent when offering your volunteer time and money as you would with any other investment. Make a site visit—do whatever it takes for you to understand and feel comfortable with the charities in which you plan to invest.
