Seeing and Doing It All

A romance that sparked between mutual friends turned into an everlasting bond on March 16, 1974. Milton and Melinda Evans married that day and united not only their love for each other, but also their passion for traveling and teaching. They have trekked across the globe, and it's always with a consistent determination to "speak the language, stay off the beaten path, keep a low profile, and talk to the locals. " Their global perspective eventually strengthened their love for Flagstaff "We couldn't live in a prettier place, " Milton said.

Milton's travels began before he finished his undergraduate degree at Northern Arizona University. During his junior year, he joined the Air Force and served in the Korean War. Teaching classes for the Air Force inspired the young airman's interest in education, and with tuition assistance through the GI Bill, Milton returned to NAU and completed his bachelor's and master's degrees in education by 1961, also taking a healthy dose of business classes.

While teaching at Flagstaff High School, Milton met a teacher who became the love of his life, Melinda. In 1977 Melinda earned her MA from NAU in Spanish. Milton left teaching in 1978 to start the successful Evans Insurance Agency, currently managed by his son Randy. Melinda retired from teaching after 35 years and has pursued a career in designing jeweIry. Milton and Melinda are both fond of their education experience at NAU.

"You can't do much better than NAU as far as educational 6ppo~unitiesy Milton sai& Melinda echoes his praise for the university by describing it as a "safe haven with a family atmosphere that other universities simply lack."

The Evans' strong belief in the value of an NAU education and in the business college, led them to create a charitable gift annuity for the benefit of the W. A. Franke College of Business.

"NA U does a tremendous job providing a strong education in different academic areas," Melinda said. "We are both proud to be alumni."
