The Father McAnulty Society was established to recognize alumni and friends who have included a gift for Duquesne University in their estate plans. These gifts take many forms including bequests by will, living trusts, beneficiary designations or other testamentary documents. All are greatly appreciated and help to ensure the tradition of excellence at Duquesne University for future generations.
Not only was Father McAnulty well admired and respected by the students, staff and faculty of the University during his tenure as president from 1959 until 1980, he did a tremendous amount of fundraising and was able to bring the Master Plan of the previous president, Father Gallagher, to life.
Father McAnulty majored in Philosophy and English at Duquesne, graduating in 1936. He attended St. Mary's Holy Ghost Seminary of Connecticut, earning a bachelor of divinity, and he was ordained as a Holy Ghost Father in 1940. When he became president, McAnulty made the position his own. Having the longest tenure of any president save Father Hehir, "Father Mac" was beloved by Duquesne students, and he quickly created his own visible place in the Pittsburgh community. He soon embarked on fulfilling the ambitious Master Plan envisioned by his predecessor, Father Gallagher, but radically changed and enlarged it in the process.
To do so, Father McAnulty raised funds to build the science building, named Mellon Hall as a result of a $2,000,000 gift from the Richard King Mellon Charitable Trust toward the building campaign. It was also under his tenure that new dormitories were built, the library was expanded, the School of Music and the Student Union were constructed, and the Bluff Street project proceeded, turning Vickroy Street into a pedestrian mall known today as Academic Walk.
In addition to the capital improvements, Father McAnulty lobbied to the Pennsylvania legislature with other representatives of private institutions of higher education, which lead to the creation of the Pennsylvania higher Education Assistance Agency ("PHEAA"). He continued to nurture and encourage increased alumni participation and was as enthusiastic about the Dukes as the student body.
To honor Father Mac's leadership and dedication to the continued advancement of the academics and facilities of Duquesne University, we invite you to join the Father McAnulty Society. Alumni and friends who have made provisions for Duquesne University in their estate plans, but have not informed the Planned Giving office, or those who wish to update their plans to include Duquesne University, please contact us.
