Bequest Language

The sample bequest language for Brown University is:

"I give to Brown University in Providence in the State of Rhode Island, and Providence Plantations, a Rhode Island nonbusiness corporation with a place of business at 110 Elm Street, Providence, Rhode Island [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property], income and principal to be applied in its discretion for its general uses and purposes."

If you prefer to make a gift to Brown's endowment, use the following language:

"I give to Brown University in Providence in the State of Rhode Island, and Providence Plantations, a Rhode Island nonbusiness corporation with a place of business at 110 Elm Street, Providence, Rhode Island [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property] income only to be applied in its discretion for its general uses and purposes."

If you would like to restrict the gift to a particular purpose, please contact the Office of Planned Giving so that we can discuss appropriate language. In any case, the language for a restricted gift should include the following sentence:

If it shall at any time be impractical to apply this gift as I have directed, Brown University shall have the discretion to apply this gift to other needs identified by the University which conform as closely as possible to my intent.

"For attorneys: Brown University's complete legal name is, 'Brown University in Providence in the State of Rhode Island, and Providence Plantations.' It is a Rhode Island corporation. "
