The Robert H. Flarsheim Society

The Robert H. Flarsheim Society was formed to honor our alumni and friends who have included the University of Missouri-Kansas City in their estate plan or other planned gift arrangement. The Robert H. Flarsheim Society increases awareness of the personal benefits of charitable gift planning for our alumni and friends and encourages them to consider making a meaningful planned gift to the university.

Members of the Robert H. Flarsheim Society are specially recognized in university publications and are provided access to additional university resources, activities, events and benefits. Click here to view the members of the Robert H. Flarsheim Society.

The Society's namesake, Robert H. Flarsheim, was a long-time resident in the neighborhood of UMKC. He purchased his home on Cherry Street next door to the Chancellor's Residence in the 1940's and lived there until his death in 1993. He was intimately involved in the life of our university.

Mr. Flarsheim has been described as the quintessential lifelong learner. His passion for learning manifested itself by initiating brown-bag lunches with university gardeners to learn "what makes trees grow faster" and by taking part in frequent and sometimes intellectually challenging discussions of current events with students on their way to class.

Mr. Flarsheim believed that a strong "town and gown" relationship is an essential building block for Kansas City's university, and he worked toward that goal through his leadership as one of the founding directors of the University Associates, a major community based support organization of UMKC. He believed in students and invested in their academic pursuits through many gifts of scholarships and fellowships.

Finally, he loved the physical facilities of our institution and invested in them by making a gift to help beautify what he considered to be the most beautiful urban campus in the country. At the time of his death, Mr. Flarsheim left in excess of $8.8 million for UMKC--the largest planned gift in the university's history--to endow a fund to support the ongoing care and maintenance of the campus and the grounds he loved so well.

The Robert H. Flarsheim Society recognizes those individuals who, through their commitments to the University of Missouri-Kansas City, believe in the power of higher education and share a vision for a greater university. UMKC is honored to recognize the following alumni and friends with membership in the Robert H. Flarsheim Society are grateful for their personal commitment to strengthening the future of UMKC.
