Legacy Continues Through Generous Estate Gift

Swedish Cancer Institute's Division of Thoracic Surgery was established in 2000 in response to a growing need for advanced thoracic surgical care. Since then it has rapidly developed into a strong and vibrant program, offering a complete range of thoracic surgical procedures with an emphasis on thoracic oncology, benign diseases of the esophagus and minimally invasive approaches to thoracic surgery.

Recently, the Division received a very special gift from the estate of Walter "Alan" Crowe, made to honor his physicians for the care he received.

Alan's interactions with Swedish began when he was diagnosed with mesothelioma. Friend Joe Saldin often accompanied Alan to his appointments and said that before he came to Swedish, Alan was given little hope. "Thanks to the doctors and staff at Swedish, Alan was given optimism," Joe says. "While he knew there wasn't a cure, Alan was made to feel like the remainder of his life could be high quality, productive, and most important, happy." To show his gratitude, Alan included a generous charitable bequest for the Swedish Division of Thoracic Surgery in his estate plans.

"Swedish is grateful to Alan and to the many other generous supporters of the Division of Thoracic Surgery," says Dr. Eric Valliéres, surgeon in the Swedish Division of Thoracic Surgery. "Community partnerships are vital to the success and growth of our program, and the fact that Alan's gift was made in gratitude for the care he received makes it incredibly meaningful to us. His gift will help us continue to develop our research efforts and improve thoracic surgery for future patients."
