Philosophy Department, UB College of Arts and Sciences to Benefit

Paul Kurtz, PhD, professor emeritus of philosophy, described his 45 years of teaching at UB as a "great adventure" where he was able to "take UB to the world" through his students and lectures on all continents. Calling himself a planetary humanist, Kurtz is credited with birthing the secular humanism movement and founding modern skepticism. Known on an international scale through his books, teaching and lectures, Kurtz is editor-in-chief of Free Inquiry, the magazine published by the Council for Secular Humanism; chair of the Center for Inquiry Transnational's 42 centers and communities worldwide; and founding chair of the committee for Skeptical Inquiry.

He has made it his life's journey to rely on rational methods such as logic, observation and science. Living a joyful life is part of his journey, he says, and one way he derives pleasure and meaning is by giving back to the place that allowed him to thrive. "I love UB deeply," he says. His bequest gift to UB, along with a charitable gift annuity that he set up, will establish the Paul Kurtz Lecture Series, bringing notable speakers to campus to speak on topics relevant to the philosophy of humanism to benefit the development of critical intelligence of future generations of UB students.
