Gates Endowment Challenge

The YMCA of Greater Seattle "Camp hasn't just taught me leadership skills or cooperation or team-building, camp has taught me who I am." —Katherine Yagle, Camping Services Youth Ambassador
The YMCA of Greater Seattle is strengthening its endowment fund to support very low-income youth participation at YMCA Camp Orkila and YMCA Camp Colman. To help the YMCA's effort, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has issued a challenge grant—a 50 cent match for every dollar donated. This collaborative effort will ultimately create a $3.75 million camp endowment fund, allowing 1,300 more campers each year to receive financial assistance, eliminating barriers to their participation.

The Gates Endowment Challenge is part of the larger It's All About Community! Capital Campaign, which will enable the YMCA to serve 50,000 more individuals each year through four new comprehensive state-of-the-art facilities, improvements to three existing facilities and a larger camp endowment.

Ways to Make a Gift
  • Single Cash Gift—Gifts can be made via check or credit card.
  • Over Time—Pledges can be made now with payment—and tax deductions—spread over as much as 5 years.
  • Gift of Marketable Securities—An alternative to cash is a gift of appreciated property, such as securities. In many (if not most) situations, the full, fair market value of the gifts of appreciated property is deductible. This form of gift often avoids capital gains tax.
  • Irrevocable Bequests—Irrevocable gifts made by a bequest through your estate will be matched on a present value basis by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These gifts must be approved by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and a simple deferred pledge agreement must be finalized between the donor and the YMCA of Greater Seattle. Click here to view an Irrevocable Bequest Agreement—Individual or Irrevocable Bequest Agreement—Couple.
  • Employer Matched Gift—A gift that is matched by your employer allows donors to double or triple the amount of their contribution, especially if the match is obtained each year of the pledge period. Please consult your benefits coordinator or human resources manager. If your employer does not have a formal matching program, they may still agree if you ask. All employer-matched gifts will also be matched by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
  • Family Giving/Named Funds—Individual families may also structure innovative family matches to involve everyone in creating a significant contribution. For gifts of more than $20,000 a "named fund" can be created.
  • Other Options—The YMCA would be happy to provide further confidential information as your formulate your pledge or gift to the endowment. We also recommend that you consult with your own financial and tax advisors as part of maximizing and finalizing your campaign gift plans.
